Pine is often selected when budget is the main constraint. One important consideration in South Louisiana is moisture: pine boards frequently arrive with a high moisture content. As the boards dry, they can shrink and leave small gaps between pickets, and they are more prone to warping than cedar. We plan the spacing of the horizontal runners to help support the boards and minimize movement, though natural wood can still change as it dries.

Cedar is our preferred material for wood privacy fencing. It generally has less moisture in the boards at installation, so it tends to shrink and warp less as it settles. Cedar also offers a cleaner natural appearance and typically lasts longer than pine. Actual service life still depends on exposure, maintenance, and conditions around the property.
