Honey Locust
HAYDEN’S DESIGN, BUILT FOR THE LANDSCAPE.
Southland built a cedar-framed cattle-panel fence at Honey Locust, Hayden Reilly’s artist-retreat property near Arnaudville.
Hayden developed the fence concept herself. Cedar posts and horizontal rails frame galvanized cattle panels into a series of open, structured bays. The system establishes a clear boundary without replacing the wooded, rural setting with a solid wall.
That openness matters to the long-term plan. Hayden intends to establish native plants throughout the yard and along the fence line, allowing the planting and the fence to become more integrated as the landscape matures.

02 / Framed Cattle Panels
AN OPEN FENCE WITH A FINISHED RHYTHM.
The cedar frame gives each metal panel a deliberate edge and repeats consistently along the property. The galvanized grid preserves sightlines and creates a practical boundary while leaving the future planting visible from both sides.

03 / A Living Landscape
Native Planting + Pond
THE BOUNDARY WILL CHANGE AS THE PLANTS GROW.
The fence belongs to a broader plan for a property shaped by native planting, habitat, and water.
Honey Locust includes a natural pool and pond conceived as a living ecosystem, with native and aquatic plants supporting water quality, habitat, and the ecological life of the pond. Planned native planting will continue through the yard and along the fence line.
The cattle-panel grid provides a light visual framework for that growth. Rather than separating the designed landscape from the boundary, it gives the planting a structure it can inhabit over time.
04 / Built Beyond the Fence Line
A TRELLIS MADE FOR PEGGY MARTIN ROSES.
Southland also fabricated a custom welded steel trellis for Hayden’s planting plan.
The tall grid creates a durable climbing structure for Peggy Martin roses and carries the cattle-panel language into another part of the property. The fabrication photograph documents the trellis being welded in Southland’s shop before installation.

Honey Locust Artist Retreat
HOME TO THE AWARD-WINNING HOUSEofCARDS.
Honey Locust is a 30-acre artist-retreat property along Bayou Bourbeaux between Arnaudville and Grand Coteau.
Its HOUSEofCARDS retreat was designed and built by students in UL Lafayette’s School of Architecture and Design Building Institute. The cast-in-place concrete structure uses board forming made from wood salvaged from an old barn on the property and was formally completed in 2022.
The project received ACI Louisiana’s Best Overall Concrete Structure recognition at the January 2023 awards event. These sources document the setting and the building; the fence design and Southland installation details on this page come directly from the project.
