Custom Picket Fence
A FENCE DRAWN FROM THE BUILDING IT SURROUNDS.
Southland built this custom cypress picket fence around a customer’s pigeonnier in Arnaudville.
A pigeonnier is a freestanding or attached dovecote traditionally used to house pigeons. In Louisiana, these recognizable towers remain part of the architectural vocabulary carried into the region through French and Creole traditions.
The goal was not to place an ordinary fence around an unusual building. Every proportion and finish needed to feel at home with the pigeonnier and its wooded South Louisiana setting.

02 / Designed for Its Setting
ACADIANA CHARACTER, BUILT INTO THE DETAILS.
The completed fence creates a strong enclosure without competing with the architecture.
The varied picket widths give the long runs a handmade rhythm. Their pointed profiles repeat around the structure, while taller corner and gate posts organize each change in direction and entry point.
From a distance, the fence reads as part of the property. Up close, the joinery and individually shaped pieces show exactly how much custom work went into it.
03 / The Craft
Cut + Fit by Hand
NO FACTORY-REPEATED PICKETS.
We hand-cut pickets in multiple widths and cut the point on every single board.
The varied widths were intentional, creating a measured irregularity that suits the traditional building better than a uniform stock panel would. The horizontal 2×4 rails were notched and inlaid into the posts for a cleaner, more integrated connection.
Every corner post and gate post was finished with a French Gothic point. Those larger hand-shaped caps echo the picket geometry while marking the structural moments of the fence.

CUSTOM MEANS RESPONDING TO WHAT IS ALREADY THERE.
This project called for more than enclosure. It called for a fence that respected the pigeonnier, carried its geometry into the landscape, and looked specific to this Arnaudville property from every side.
